A series of bomb threats made against schools in Belgium this week and the arrest of a person in Morocco, have Ontario Provincial Police believing there is a connection to an incident here in Ontario last month.
OPP began the investigation on November 1st after several school boards across Northern Ontario, including Coseil scholaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales, received threats of explosives placed inside their schools.
This prompted the closure of the boards schools in Greenstone, Thunder Bay, Ignace, Dryden and Red Lake.
A demand of money in exchange for the locations was made, however no explosives were found and the schools were given the all clear.
Police say Belgian authorities arrested an individual in Morocco for similar threats made in Belgium this week, and the OPP say there is a strong reason to believe the accused in custody is responsible for the threats here.
Cybercrime investigators will continue to work with Belgian police, however the OPP will not speculate when or if charges will be laid in Canada against the accused.
