Results of provincial testing show students in Grade 3 and Grade 6 at both the Lakehead Public and Thunder Bay Catholic District School boards are strong in literacy but require improvements in math.
The percentage of Grade 3 students at the public board who meet or exceed the provincial standard in reading and writing sit at 74 and 68 percent respectively, while those at the English Catholic board sit at 73 and 63 percent respectively.
Those numbers increase into the 80 percent range for those in the Grade 6 level
However, less than 60 percent of students in Grade 3 at both boards meet the standards for math, and the numbers slide into the mid 40’s for Grade 6.
Math scores for Grade 9 students at both boards on the EQAO show only 50 percent met or exceeded the provincial standard.
