Drought conditions continue to persist across the Winnipeg River basin.
Which as a result the Lake of the Woods Secretariat says it will be restricting outflow from Lake of the Woods on Friday, which is expected to last until-mid October.
The reasoning behind this is to build extra water storage in the lake and maintain slightly higher levels through the winter into spring.
However the Secretariat notes lake levels in March of 2024 are expected to be lower than normal.
But believes by restricting flows now it could help provide sustained flows on the Winnipeg River next year.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued an El NiƱo advisory, which causes warm and dry conditions in the Winnipeg River basin.
Meaning it can expect the predominant storm track to be further south, which will result in a milder winter with potentially lower than normal snowfall.
This can manifest in the spring with lower than normal spring flows.
