The topic of tax sales and their surpluses was a discussion brought towards members of the Ford Government through the Shuniah delegation at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference in London this week.
Mayor Wendy Landry explains the situation municipalities currently face.
“If we have a tax sale where someone hasn’t paid their taxes, and we sell that property for, lets say $40,000 over what was owed to the municipality, we have to pay that extra money back to the government.”
The hope is to have communities keep those surplus funds and direct them to offset other costs.
Landry says she is optimistic the proposal could become policy.
