Its a big birthday celebration for Shuniah this year which turns 150 years old.
“March 29th 1873 Shuniah was incorporated,” says Mayor Wendy Landry. “So we are one of the oldest municipalities in Ontario.”
The name Shuniah is based upon the Ojibway word ‘zhooniya’, which translates to money or silver, which the municipality was the site of one of the first silver mines in the area.
The milestone anniversary is a chance to celebrate the rich history of the community, that some people might not even be aware of.
“Its a very rich history in this area that people are not aware of. First of all that Shuniah went all the way to the Pigeon River border, and we were annexed by all the communities including Port Arthur and Fort William, so that is one aspect people don’t know.”
Landry says residents and visitors are welcome to celebrate today with cake at the MacGregor Recreation Centre located at 800 Lakeshore Drive.
As well other events are planned for later this year.
