The Port of Thunder Bay welcomed its first ship with the arrival just after 5:00 a.m. Sunday of the Harvest Spirit.
Captain Adam Hagen says he is excited to join a select group of individuals as the captain of the first ship into the Port of Thunder Bay is commemorated during a Top Hat ceremony.
“I’m happy to lead the charge this year, and its quite an honour as I read in the top hat some of the old captains I’m now associated with.”
Some of those previous captains, are ones Hagen says he served with over his 23 year career.
According to Port Authority CEO Tim Heney, the arrival of the first ship of the season is a definite sign of spring.
“Once the first ship comes it, this is the furthest inland port in Canada. We see the commerce starting up again its a pretty exciting time for us, and everyone is optimistic.”
As just as quickly as she arrived, the Harvest Spirit took on a load of 14 thousand tonnes of canola before leaving Sunday evening, but for harbour watchers in the city, the she will be a regular sight in the port this year picking up more shipments of grain.
Another Top Hat Ceremony will be held in the coming months, to welcome the first “Salty” or ocean faring vessel of the year.
