Truck drivers are now at risk of penalties if they don’t use an electronic device (ELD) to monitor their driving hours.
The rules changed back in June 2022, but penalties weren’t going to be enforced until Jan. 1, 2023.
Who does this affect? Drivers who were logging hours prior to June 12, 2022, are now required to log their hours via an ELD;
- truck within Ontario only
- truck or bus crossing provincial/territorial borders
- truck or bus with licence plates from outside Ontario
Previously paper logs were used which can easily be altered to the benefit of the employer and/or the employee.
Currently in Ontario, a driver must have 10 hours off-duty in a day. A driver cannot drive more than 13 hours in a day and cannot drive after 14 hours on duty in a day.
Penalties for not having an ELD, or one that doesn’t mean the province’s standards include fines between $250 to $20,000 and points on your carrier safety record that can affect your rating upon conviction.
