The Ministry of the Solicitor General has confirmed the death of an inmate at the Thunder Bay District Jail over the weekend.
Paramedics were called to the jail on Sunday morning after the inmate was found in medical distress and after they arrived the inmate was declared deceased.
As a result several investigations are now underway.
The Office of the Chief Coroner has launched an investigation to determine the cause of death, the Ministry of the Solicitor General conducts an internal investigation to determine whether all policies and procedures were followed, and local police may investigate to determine if the death was as a result of criminal activity.
If it is determined the death was not due to natural causes a mandatory inquest is to be held.
