Another incumbent has decided to not run in the upcoming municipal election.
At-Large Councillor Aldo Ruberto made it official Monday night during the council meeting.
“I know that the majority of people out there believe that this is the best city to live in otherwise you would be living somewhere else, I’d be living somewhere else,” Ruberto stated, while fighting tears. “I have done everything in power to move this city forward, not backward, and I know the rest of the people around this table have done the same thing.”
Ruberto has served sixteen years in municipal politics and sat on a number of boards in the latest term of council including:
- Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board (TBDSSAB)
- Fort William Business District BIA (Victoria Avenue)
- Thunder Bay Hydro Recruitment Committee
- Tbaytel Recruitment Committee
- Thunder Bay Poverty Reduction Strategy
When talking about his retirement, Ruberto stated, “I look forward to not answering the phone, emails, messages or being on social media. I will also be keeping tabs on what’s happening at the city, and will fully support anyone that wants to run for council in anyway that I can. I wish all of the councillors the best of luck.”
Ruberto, along with Bill Mauro, Rebecca Johnson, Cody Fraser and Brian McKinnon have all announced that they won’t be running for re-election while Peng You is running to be Mayor.
Nomination papers need to be filed by Friday, August 19th at 2:00 p.m.
Election Day is Monday, October 24th with the four-year council term of office commencing on Tuesday, November 15th.
