It’s here, installed and ready to be put to work.
The Regional Food Distribution Association (RFDA) finally has it’s new processing room with an industrial sized dicer.
This isn’t something you’ll find at a big box store, this item cost $66,000 plus another $30,000 for to make sure the unit is up to code for electrical safety standards. There is some work left to do when it comes to maintaining the machine; hooking up drainage for when it’s cleaned, but otherwise it’s plugged in and ready to go.
One of the RFDA’s biggest problems was the amount of fresh food it would receive but not enough time to process and preserve it.
Not only does this machine allow for better time spent preparing foods for the community members who benefit from the RFDA, it also creates a learning environment for those in the new processing room to learn new skills when it come to food handling and preparation.
Previous to having the Edward Scissor hands of dicers, it would take volunteers a whole day to dice or slice potatoes into french fries. Now, the RFDA can do three times the amount and ensure much less food is wasted because of that.
It’s estimated that $120,000 of fresh produce can be saved from the garbage each year now.
