The new mountain bike skills park is getting another cash infusion.
The Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is sourcing $250,000 through the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT).
The goal for the multi-use trail is to establish this for Thunder Bay as a tourist and event destination.
Once complete, the city could see up to 10 thousand visitors a year at the trails.
Crews are aiming to have the bike park complete for next week while the whole Trowbridge Forest Master Plan, which has a total price tag of $1.5 million, has a Fall 2022 completion date.
Mark Maranzan spoke to Acadia News and said that a lot of the new trail development happens deep within the forest…
“The first phase happened without anyone even realizing it was going on until they connected it all in…”
“Next week our contractor will be starting work on what we refer to as the Mesa zone in the park. It’s the highest point in the area and will see about 6.5km of new trail put in this year (likely finished next year due to the delays this summer). Most of this area is characterized by the steep side slopes, rocky outcroppings, large glacial boulders and lookouts to both Lake Superior and the North Current River Valley. Next year we will also see the addition of 4 mountain bike specific gravity trails (downhill only) and a climbing access trail added to this zone. This will bring the full distance of the system to about 35km of single track trail.
This area will likely be our signature zone because it’s the best terrain for trails, most visually stunning, and exemplifies what it means to be in the Northwestern Ontario boreal forest.“
