A hostage-taking incident at the Kenora Jail has ended.
The incident began just after 1:00 Central Time Friday afternoon, when a group of inmates took one of the correctional service officers hostage.
The OPP along with the Kenora Fire Department and paramedics were called out, and the Ministry of Corrections also sent in what they call an “Institutional Crisis Intervention team” from Thunder Bay.
The stand-off with the inmates lasted over three hours, but shortly after 4:00 Central Time, the prison guard was successfully released.
He was taken to hospital for treatment and observation.
Greg Flood is a spokesperson from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and issued this statement:
““We want to thank all the front line staff at the Kenora Jail that worked to secure the release of the correctional officer. Our thoughts are with the officer and his family during this difficult time.”
The name of the correctional services officer and the inmates involved in the hostage-taking have not been released.
