From this morning’s “TODAY IN THE BAY”:
So….I’ve never been a fan of these “ugly sweaters”. But, who am I to argue……because they’re so popular!
Do you know the history behind the “ugly sweater”?
Ugly sweaters became popular in the 1950’s when Christmas was very heavily commercialized. The first known ‘sweaters’ were called “Jingle Bell Sweaters”. They literally had decorations on them, and the intention behind them was never to be ‘ugly’. They were meant to be ‘artistic and joyful’.
It continued thru the 80s, then it died down. Then, 2001 came…and a little movie called “Bridget Jones’s Diary” was released, and the Christmas sweater phase was revived.
Fast forward to 2008 – it was one of the most searched items on Google. AND NOW – they’re beyond popular. Every clothing store you go to this time of year has huge displays of “ugly sweaters”.
