The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are seeking the public’s assistance as they investigate the death of a deer in the city.
The investigation was launched on July 26th after a neighbour discovered a small spotted fawn had gotten snagged in a snare.
“It barely got underway in life, and it of course perished,” said Staff Sergeant Rick LeBlanc. “But we are investigating, we’ve been actively door knocking in the neighbourhood to see if anybody is aware of who might have set this snare.”
LeBlanc says the snare was set on a utility pole in a back alley of a vacant home on Hodge Street and Rockwood Avenue, using a piece of communications cable.
He notes snares are used quite commonly through the trapping industry and those who trap animals do so as humanely as possible, he adds a big concern is the indiscriminate nature of a snare being set in a high population setting.
“This was the furthest thing from a humane trap and indiscreet. It could have captured anything a domestic dog, cat, god forbid a child but it could happen.”
LeBlanc was unable to say if any penalties could be incurred as a result of the snare, as the investigation is still in its early stages.
