There is no Restricted Fire Zone in effect going into the holiday long weekend here in Northwestern Ontario, especially with a Low to Moderate across the region.
However as Ministry spokesperson Isabelle Chenard explains the sunny weather will change things.
“Therefore we know the fire hazard will rebound throughout the Victoria Day long weekend, so we’re asking Northwestern Ontarians as well as visitors to the region to be vigilant if they are planning any campfires.”
Chenard adds if you are in the boundaries of a municipality to check to see if a burning ban is in place in the community before lighting up.
As of noon Friday the region only has two active forest fires, Sioux Lookout 3 which is set at 25 hectares and is listed as being held, meanwhile Thunder Bay 2 located near Armstrong is a 6 hectare fire, and listed as under control.
With the conditions the region has experienced these last few days, its really helped according to Chenard.
“Anytime we have cooler temperatures and precipitation it is favourable for the containment of fires, definitely the hard work that our fire ranger crews are doing also is keeping those fires in check.”
So far there have only been 17 fires this fire season, which began on April 1st.
