DGC Achneepineskum optimistic following swearing in of new Chief of Police

Monday’s changing of command ceremony for the Thunder Bay Police saw the attendance of dignitaries from across the region, including the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

Deputy Grand Chief Anna Betty Achneepineskum says she is optimistic of the future relationship between NAN and the police, noting of the continued need for dialogue.

“We have a responsibility too, and our responsibility is that relationship continues in a good way.”

That dialogue will also include discussions on how to address the injustices in the past and a commitment that they never happen again.

Also among those in attendance was one of the people responsible for hiring him.

Police Board Administrator Malcolm Mercer says Fleury is the perfect fit to move forward with the service and the changes which have been recommended.

“He’s a guy with a lot of expertise, a lot of different perspective which is important to bring to the police service and to Thunder Bay, and I think he’s a genuinely decent and thoughtful person. So he’s someone I look forward to working with.”

Mercer adds he has identified 116 action items over the last few weeks, which he plans to work with Fleury on in bringing to life.
