Thunder Bay Police have brought charges against the 35 year old driver of a vehicle which collided with a tree early Thursday morning, and claimed the life of the 34 year old passenger.
First responders were called to the intersection of Lyon Boulevard and Rita Street just after 2:30 a.m. to reports of a vehicle which had struck a tree.
Officers discovered the male driver had fled the scene, abandoning a 34 year old woman, who was trapped in the passenger seat.
She was extricated from the vehicle and taken to hospital where she died from her injuries.
Police were able to track down the driver by following a blood trail to a nearby home, where officers observed signs of impairment.
Investigators with the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Traffic Unit learned the sedan being driven by the motorist was traveling south on Lyon Boulevard East at a high rate of speed, that section of roadway has a maximum speed limit of 30km/h.
The driver lost control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway and colliding with the tree.
He has been charged with:
• Impaired Operation causing death
• Dangerous Operation causing death
• Fail to stop at accident resulting in death
• Fail to comply with Release Order
• Fail to Comply with Probation Order
He appeared in court Friday and was remanded into custody.
