Officials with the Thunder Bay Police are recommending the service proceed with using BriefCam video analytics.
This is part of a revitalization of the Eye on the Street video surveillance program which utilizes artificial intelligence, and could help in a number of investigations such as missing persons, abductions, sudden deaths, violent crime, and property crime.
A report from TBPS notes the software has already been used as part of investigations into incidents here in the city, as well carried out some test runs in late January and early February.
From those tests a majority were successful, however several tests conducted on February 6th state “Once BriefCam’s server issue is addressed the object will be searched and extracted.”
A 71% of the 521 respondents to a survey conducted last month were in favour of the implementation of the the system, however many expressed concerns over privacy and abuse of the technology.
As part of the recommendations BriefCam would be limited to designated investigators and the use of facial recognition software to not be used for the foreseeable future.
