A Thunder Bay Police officer has received what the service believes to be minor injuries after their unmarked cruiser was hit by an impaired driver Wednesday.
Officers were called to the intersection of James and Arthur Streets shortly before 2:30 p.m. to reports of a two vehicle collision, upon arrival they observed two vehicles, a red pick up truck and the unmarked police vehicle, both of which had sustained considerable damage.
Through an investigation it was determined the pick up truck had entered the intersection on a red light, and struck the eastbound cruiser.
Speaking with the driver several signs of impairment were observed by officers.
The driver complied with a field sobriety test demand, and was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries by Superior North EMS, officers later administered the test, which the driver failed.
The motorist then complied with a blood draw demand to confirm their impairment by drug, and was subsequently arrested and transported to police headquarters.
A quantity of suspected crack cocaine and Hydromorphone was later seized.
The 28 year old driver, from Thunder Bay faces the following:
• Operation of a Motor Vehicle while Impaired – Alcohol and drugs
• Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
• Possession of Cocaine
• Possession of Hydromorphone
• Possession of over 30 grams dried cannabis in a public place
They have since been released with conditions and a future appearance date.
