The Thunder Bay Police Board has filled one of its two vacant provincially appointed positions.
Karen Michado will begin serving her three-year term effective immediately.
For the past 34 years she has worked in various public sector service roles, first with the Ministry of Labour as an Industrial Health and Safety Officer, before joining the Ministry of the Solicitor General.
There she held the positions of Deputy Superintendent of Administration at the Thunder Bay Jail and Correctional Centre, before being promoted to Superintendent.
Later she took the lead on separating and creating new structures for both the Thunder Bay Jail and Correctional, and retired from her position in 2020.
Additionally Machado has been an advocate for diversity and inclusion, co-chairing the Systemic and Antiracism Organizational Change Committee and served as Co-Chair for the Ministry of Community and Safety and Correctional Services Indigenous Subcommittee of the Human Rights Project Charter.
A member of the Red Rock Indian Band located near Nipigon, where she grew up, before moving on to Thunder Bay.
The Thunder Bay Police Services Board currently is run by an Acting Administrator, a board spokesperson says they “anticipate the City of Thunder Bay to make its appointment decision soon, for this term of Council.”
