The city of Thunder Bay is looking to fill a role that has been vacant for three years.
On Monday night, council will examine a memorandum from General Manager Karen Lewis (starting on Page 54) to endorse the appointment of Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Service Chief Greg Hankkio for a four year term.
Hankkio said he is honoured and has vowed to do his best in the role.
“Quite frankly there are a lot of talented fire service people within the Thunder Bay District that could fill this role very well besides me,” remarked Hankkio. “We did actually select an alternate fire coordinator (through an election process) so Nolalu Chief Sarah Shoemaker will be in that role, which is good for her.”
When discussing the role further, Hankkio added, “I have a familiarity with the fire service, and how a fire service operates, and what’s required under an incident management system or an incident command system in the event of a larger scale event. It’s also about being able to coordinate, communicate and pull people together in a collaborative manner and make sure we have a functioning plan.”
The position of District Fire Coordinator was last held by John Hay in 2019.
