OPP closed off the road along Hwy 61 in Thunder Bay Thursday morning.
The area between Arthur St and Neebing Ave was only accessible for emergency service vehicles and workers.
Officers on the scene investigated and discovered that a southbound SUV lost control and went into the northbound lanes. Another SUV coming the opposite way hit the wayward car.
The first driver had to be rescued from their vehicle and was taken to hospital with severe, possibly, life threatening injuries. The second driver suffered minor injuries.
The highway re-opened by mid-day.
