A Thunder Bay native has passed away at the age of 88.
The Honourable Joseph Comuzzi was first elected to the House of Commons for Thunder Bay—Superior North in 1988.
For 20 years, Comuzzi was a politian and started six terms as a Member of Parliament in ’88.
During his time in federal politics, Comuzzi held many portfolios including Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development in Northern Ontario (FedNor) which is now held by the Honourable Patty Hajdu.
Other career highlights include; Co-Vice-Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Canada-US Relations; Chair: Canadian Section, United States International Joint Commission; and Member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada.
The Liberal caucus made the decision to remove Comuzzi in March 2007 after he pledged his support for the Conservative budget. The PC budget had allotted funding for the cancer research centre in Thunder Bay (now known as the Regional Cancer Care Northwest).
He became an independent, then crossed the floor and joined the Conservative Party in June of the same year.
Comuzzi announced he would not seek re-election in September 2008.
