The Ontario Provincial Police is stepping in with their own investigation into the death of Stacy DeBungee.
The announcement Tuesday came with a statement from Detective Inspector Shawn Glassford, who noted their intention is to thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading to the death, adding that his family, friends, community and the public deserve to know what happened.
The request for OPP involvement was made by the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General.
The 41-year-old Anishinaabe man was found in October 2015 in the McIntyre River, close to the intersection of Waterford and Carrick Streets.
The initial investigation deemed the passing as non-criminal within a day of his body being discovered.
Sergeant Shawn Whipple along with Staff Sergeants Shawn Harrison and Susan Kaucharik face charges of failing to perform their duties according to the Police Services Act.
Two of the officers are also accused of failing to treat or protect people equally during the case.
The passing was singled out in the 2018 Broken Trust report into how the force handled cases involving Indigenous people.
