Thunder Bay’s Adam Sergerie is a busy guy these days.
He is a teacher at St Edmond IB World School in Edmonton, involved in the school’s hockey academy and as of April 6th, took on the role as President of Operations with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, (AJHL).
Sergerie tells Acadia Broadcasting he’s been learning fast about the business side of running a junior team and admits it’s not as easy as it looks.
The former Thunder Bay King also had to get up to speed on the regular testing methods for his players when it comes to COVID-19.
“They have to test every Wednesday,” mentioned Sergerie. “Every Thursday morning, the (AJHL) is made aware of all the tests so if there are any positive tests, the whole team has to quarantine for 14 days.”
Through a statement on its website, the league indicated teams have committed to utilizing private PCR, (polymerase chain reaction) testing and enhanced daily screening for all players and team staff is monitored through an app on their phone.
Sergerie knows this season has been tough on the players.
“You’re asking teenagers to really be mature in their preparation and be mindful with who they surround themselves with outside of the rink,” noted Sergerie.
The AJHL unveiled its schedule for the final weeks this season, featuring its Return to Play Plan on Wednesday and with games set to wrap up on May 9th, the league will have completed 60 exhibition games and over 100 regular season games.
