The Underground Gym has it’s doors open.
Owner and founder of the gym for youth, Peter Panetta, says organized classes will start next week.
“I’m bringing in the kids already. It’s just a free for all, there’s no classes yet, just let them have fun. There’s a couple of new kids in here, they want to check it out, and they want to box,” says Panetta.
The owner adds he’s gotten approval from the local health unit to be deemed an essential service.
He says he went through the proper channels to get his facility to stay open even during a lockdown. “It’s a safe place for counciling, and what not… it’ll fit into one of their little niches. I brought it up to the District Health unit, we met, we talked, we’re good to go.”
The owner notes there’s still work to do in the kitchen and the upstairs.
He adds he’s extremely grateful to all the contractors and countless people in Thunder Bay who’ve donated time and money to make the new facility on Victoria Avenue a reality, after fire destroyed the building the former site was at on Simpson Street.
