The Defence will get its turn to cross examine Doctor Toby Helen Rose Wednesday.
The trial heard from the forensic pathologist, who performed the autopsy on Barbara Kentner back on July 7th 2017, three days after her passing.
RELATED: Bushby Trial Day One
Her report concluded the immediate cause of death is broken into the following sections:
- Blunt force injury to the abdomen
- Traumatic rupture of the small intestine
- Bronchopneumonia and acute-on-chronic peritonitis
Rose did note that end-stage liver disease did contribute to Kentner’s death.
When asked why samples of Kentner’s body weren’t summitted for toxicology, Dr. Rose says those tests are done when there’s a suspicion that the individual dies from an overdose of drugs, alcohol or medication.
Rose went onto say, in court, that it’s impossible to say that liver disease solely contributed to her death.
The 21-year-old Bushby has pled guilty to the charge of aggravated assault but not guilty to the charge of manslaughter .
Court was told Kentner was struck by a trailer hitch thrown from a passing vehicle in January of 2017. She died in July of that year.
FURTHER IN THE TESTIMONY
- Rose discovered a hole in the small bowel wall of Kentner but no injury to the stomach. This could cause fluid leaking into the abdominal cavity
- Kentner reportedly left the hospital just two days after the major abdominal surgery on January 30th, against the recommendations of doctors
- Kentner checked back into hospital six days later complaining of abdominal pain and fluid coming out of incisions
- Subsequent CT scan shows swelling in abdominal wall and in the colon
- Doctors admitted Kentner to hospital to see what happens and hopeful they can avoid surgery
- Her abdomen became more swollen as reports indicated the patient wasn’t taking her medications after surgery, which Rose indicated would help clear fluids out of the body through urination
- Kentner becomes very ill from liver disease in late March, and is eventually moved into palliative care
- Dr. Rose, in her autopsy, indicates no external signs of severe liver disease and nothing significant externally to lead to cause of death
- Dr. Rose notes when examining the lungs they were firmer than usual, which could’ve been a sign of pneumonia
