You may have seen protective barriers around bus drivers on some city buses as part of a pilot project.
The city installed two shields in mid-July and has started the three-month pilot. If all goes well, the shields will be installed on all buses next year.
The shields are meant to protect drivers from aggressive passengers, after a driver was assaulted last December. The union representing bus drivers has been demanding the shields for years.
More than $500,000 in funding for the shields has come through from federal and provincial sources.
General Manager of Community Services Kelly Robertson says the federal Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program funding has also come through for electronic fares. She says the city recognizes the need to integrate that into the shield project.
