Former NHLer Theo Fleury says many other men have come forward to him with their stories of surviving sexual abuse after he opened up about his experiences.
Fleury confirmed in 2009 that he was abused by his junior hockey coach, and has been touring sharing his story and speaking about trauma, mental health and recovery.
He notes after his speeches, men as old as 80 have approached him to admit they also survived abuse, and many have never told anyone what they have been through.
Fleury notes creating safe spaces to come forward is key for those who are still experiencing abuse.
The former All-Star says while he looks back fondly on his hockey career, he believes sharing his story may be more important work.
He spoke this morning at Confederation College, saying he is awed by the courage of others who have come out with their sexual abuse experiences.
