The city’s Professional Fire Fighters Association are rolling up their sleeves to serve Thanksgiving dinner at the Salvation Army today.
Association spokesperson Kevin Anderson says they’re happy to have been helping the Sally Ann for 22 years now.
“We want to keep it going,” he points out. “If we didn’t support it, who knows if would keep on going, right? And these people, it’s not only that they come for a dinner, but also socially and mentally that they come and have a place to go.”
Firefighters will help serve a full Thanksgiving meal including 12 turkeys.
Salvation Army spokesperson Gail Kromm says it means a lot to the people who take part.
“It really lets them know that they’re not alone in the world and that people really care about them, and that there’s this opportunity to have something special just like most of the rest of us enjoy.”
She adds the meal is open to anyone, from those who are homeless or dealing with poverty to people who want company during the holiday weekend.
The dinner is on from noon until two o’clock at the Cumberland Street location.
There will be shuttle service from the City Hall and Waterfront bus terminals starting at 11:45.
