An Indigenous women’s group is voicing its concerns about a recent sentence on child pornography charges.
The Ontario Native Women’s Association argues an Ottawa judge should have imposed the mandatory minimum sentence on a man charged with human trafficking but later convicted of prostitution-related charges, including making and possessing child porn.
The judge instead handed down a delayed sentence with one year of probation, which ONWA’s President says she is outraged by.
The group is calling for an overhaul of policies and laws dealing with human trafficking, claiming the way trafficking affects Indigenous women isn’t well understood in Canada.
